The annual Tammy Whitmore Memorial Award is given in memory of Tammy Whitmore, who was a student at DMS during the 1993-94 school year. Tammy passed away as the result of a swimming accident in the spring of that year. We wish you could have known Tammy; she was an active and energetic 6th grader.

In school she worked hard, and although she also found time for socializing with her many friends, she never forgot what she was here to do - to learn as much as she could, as well as she possibly could.

Out of school she also kept very busy with activities such as softball and her church's bell choir.

Tammy was an individual you would have wanted as a friend. She was friendly and kind to all students, as well as positive in her outlook on life. She knew how to live life to its fullest. And that is one of the things Tammy taught us all...that the length of a person's life isn't nearly as important as its quality. Tammy's life was packed full of good things.

Tammy reminded us of how precious every moment of life is. Don't waste a second of it.

Tammy also taught us that the students at DMS are so much more than just language arts, science, social studies, or math students. Each and every student is important to us, as individual people with their own personalities, their own likes and dislikes, their own future lives that they share a small portion of with us, and we are so very thankful for the time we spend together. We are very thankful for the time Tammy spent with us.

Obviously Tammy made a tremendous impact on us, both teachers and students. As a result, we take the nomination and award process very seriously, and with much humbleness. If you are selected as a nominee for The Tammy Whitmore Memorial Award, we hope that you, too, will consider it an honor, in recognition of the way you conduct yourself in all aspects of your life.
