The Tegu Lizard
The Tegu Lizard is one of the
biggest animals in the Amazon Rainforest. It is dark brown and
black in color, with some yellow/brownish spots.
The largest Tegu Lizard found was 7 and 1/2 feet long. They usually
grow to be 6-6 1/2 feet long.
They live on the forest floor, and eat practically anything they
can find: smaller animals, insects, fruits, leaves, eggs, worms,
frogs, and occasionally chickens from farms in the Amazon.
Its only predator is man. This is because of the fact that when
it does go onto farms, it gets trapped by the farmer and eaten.
They fry the meat from the Tegu Lizard, and sometimes dry strips
of its meat for jerky. It is considered a delicacy, since they
are rarely caught. Their meat has a very good, sometimes sweet
taste.
