These are some of the larger birds
in the world with their wing
span up
to 7 feet long (from wingtip to wingtip). They weigh up to around
40-50 pounds but the males are smaller, around 20-30 pounds. Their
talons grow to be as big as a grizzly bear's claws. It's feet
are as big as a mans hand.
It's only predators are man. My guess is because of it's size,
and also it lives up in the canopy and emergent layer, so nothing
big enough to kill it can get up there.
It eats other birds and small animals. It has enough power, to
snatch a fairly sized monkey right of a branch. Some times they
will fly for days in search of food.
They usually lay 1 or 2 eggs at a time (once every year.)
